Croton Water Treatment Plant Above Ground Buildings and Landscape

with Grimshaw Architects

Project Architect Sustainability & Site Hydrology

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) has constructed a new Water Treatment Plant (WTP) below the Mosholu golf course site in the Bronx.  Grimshaw architects were engaged to design the above ground structures and landscape components for the Plant and the Golf club, including a new clubhouse, tee boxes  and driving range.  The driving range is located on top of the WTP and is the largest known green roof in North America.  A sophisticated storm water management system was developed that takes advantage of the excess storm and ground water occurring on site, collecting, cleansing and storing it through a series of bio-engineered detention basins, constructed wetlands and storage ponds. Together with the reuse of that water for golf course irrigation and other on-site uses, the sites hydrological features will minimize the discharge of site water into NYC’s combined storm sewer while minimizing use of potable water and maximizing creation of native wetland habitat in the process.
