Garrison House - renovation
with CookFox Architects
Facade package lead, interior detailing 2010/2011
Perched on a mountainside overlooking the Hudson River, this renovation of an 18,000-square-foot, four-story manor juxtaposes new, clean Miesian lines in architecturally exposed steel, glass, and zinc extensions against the existing stucco-rendered house. Materials and finishes are kept simple to accentuate the artwork displayed, with occasional installation pieces such as a central feature stair and sculpted fireplaces designed as art interventions themselves. The original house dates back to 1913, and the renovation includes super-insulating the existing envelope with high levels of insulation and high-performance windows. These, along with a geothermal heating system, help improve energy efficiency. Additionally, with the inclusion of photovoltaic panels on the roof and ground plane, the house is intended to operate autonomously when disconnected from the grid during severe storms.
